Labour Party Postpones Congresses, Sets Up Planning Committee

The Labour Party has announced the postponement of its scheduled ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention, previously set to begin on March 26, 2026.

According to a press release issued by the party, the decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the Interim National Working Committee (NWC) and representatives of labour unions. The exercise, which was to culminate in a national convention on April 11, has been rescheduled to allow for broader participation in the ongoing membership re-registration process.

Under the earlier timetable, ward congresses were slated for March 26, local government congresses for March 28, and state congresses for March 31. However, party leadership said the adjustment was necessary to ensure inclusivity and proper organization.

As part of the new arrangements, the party has inaugurated a 45-member Congresses and Convention Committee to oversee preparations. The committee is chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, a member of the House of Representatives representing Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency.

Other members include lawmakers and party stakeholders such as Obinna Aguocha, Amaobi Ogah, Ibe Okwara Osonwa, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Benedict Etanabene, and Emeka Emeruwa, among others.

While inaugurating the committee, the party’s Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, urged members to carry out their duties with diligence, neutrality, and a strong commitment to transparency. She emphasized that the postponement provides an opportunity to ensure a smooth, credible, and hitch-free process.

The party also appealed to its members, supporters, and the Independent National Electoral Commission for understanding, assuring that a revised timetable for the congresses and convention will be announced in due course.

The development comes as the Labour Party continues efforts to strengthen its internal structures ahead of future electoral activities.
