SHIFTING TIDES: Bashir El-Rufai Advocates Fresh Face, Pushes South-East Flagbearer for African Democratic Congress 2027 Ticket

In a development that underscores growing calls for political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, Bashir El-Rufai has openly advocated for a generational shift within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging the party to present a fresh presidential candidate rather than rely on established figures.

Reacting to political discussions on X (formerly Twitter), Bashir argued that the ADC’s pathway to victory lies in abandoning recycled candidacies and embracing a new face capable of energizing the electorate. Central to his position is the strategic promotion of a South-East presidential flagbearer—an idea he believes could significantly alter Nigeria’s political calculations.

According to him, pairing a South-East candidate with a widely accepted Northern running mate would create a formidable and balanced ticket, capable of appealing across regional and ethnic divides. He maintained that such a configuration would not only strengthen the opposition but also make it more difficult for rivals to counter.

Bashir further suggested that figures like Atiku Abubakar should transition into statesman roles, providing guidance and political backing from behind the scenes rather than leading the charge as candidates. This, he implied, would allow the ADC to benefit from their experience while still projecting a renewed political image to voters.

While the ADC has yet to formally adopt any zoning arrangement or candidate framework, Bashir’s comments reflect a broader sentiment among some political actors that 2027 presents an opportunity to recalibrate Nigeria’s opposition strategy—particularly by addressing long-standing demands for greater inclusion of the South-East in presidential power dynamics.

The proposal has since fueled debate across political circles, with supporters viewing it as a bold and necessary shift, while critics warn that sidelining established heavyweights could trigger internal fractures. As consultations deepen, the ADC’s eventual decision on zoning and candidate selection is expected to play a decisive role in shaping the opposition’s prospects in the next general election.
