Supporters of former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, have reportedly begun registering in large numbers with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following his formal membership in the opposition party.
The influx of new members—many identifying as “Obidients,” a movement associated with Obi’s political base—comes after the party launched its online membership platform, adcregistration.ng. The digital portal allows prospective members to register using their National Identification Number, a move party officials say is part of efforts to expand participation and strengthen grassroots engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Political activists and supporters have taken to social media to encourage wider participation in the registration process. Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu was among those who publicly announced her registration, sharing videos and messages urging supporters to join the party and contribute to what they describe as a growing political movement.
The development is also linked to ADC’s proposal to adopt direct primaries for candidate selection. Under the system, all registered party members would be eligible to vote in the process of choosing candidates for elective offices, including the presidential ticket for the 2027 elections.
Although unofficial reports circulating online suggest that hundreds of thousands of people may have already signed up through the portal—particularly from Nigeria’s southern states—these figures have not yet been independently verified by party officials.
Political analysts note that the surge in registrations highlights the continuing influence of Obi’s support base following the 2023 presidential election. However, they also point out that securing a presidential nomination will likely involve navigating broader party dynamics and competing political interests.
Observers say the evolving situation could reshape alliances within the opposition landscape as major political figures prepare for the 2027 electoral cycle.
