Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has promised to expand access to electricity by installing solar panels on the roofs of Nigerians within 11 months if elected president in 2027.
Adebayo made the pledge while presenting his party’s policy proposals, positioning renewable energy as a key part of his plan to address Nigeria’s longstanding electricity challenges. The SDP candidate has also said his administration would focus on tackling poverty and insecurity within four years.
According to reports on his campaign promises, Adebayo said he would pursue a nationwide solar programme designed to provide households with more reliable access to electricity.
The proposal comes against the backdrop of persistent concerns over power supply, high energy costs and the reliance of many Nigerian households and businesses on petrol and diesel generators.
Adebayo has argued that expanding domestic energy production, including solar power, could help reduce the burden of electricity costs while improving productivity and economic activity.
His promise is significant because electricity remains a major issue in Nigeria’s economic and political debates. Businesses, manufacturers and households have continued to face challenges associated with unreliable power supply and the rising cost of alternative sources of energy.
However, the proposed 11-month timeline would represent a substantial nationwide infrastructure undertaking. Its implementation would depend on funding, procurement, technical capacity, distribution networks and the ability of a future administration to coordinate the programme across Nigeria’s states.
Adebayo’s latest pledge forms part of the SDP’s broader campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The party has presented poverty reduction, energy access and insecurity as key areas requiring urgent government intervention.
Adewole Adebayo contested the 2023 presidential election under the SDP and is again seeking the presidency in 2027. His campaign is expected to compete with major political contenders as parties intensify efforts to win voters ahead of the election.
