The Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has demanded answers over the killing of Kano-based social media commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, who was reportedly murdered in his home.
Obi described the incident as deeply saddening, stressing that no disagreement, criticism or neighbourhood dispute can justify the killing of a human being.
The former Anambra State governor urged the Kano State Government and relevant security agencies to launch a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation capable of establishing exactly what happened and identifying those behind the killing.
He insisted that anyone found responsible must face the full weight of the law.
Obi’s intervention comes amid concerns over the safety of Nigerians who use social media to express opinions, criticise public figures or advance views that may differ from those of others.
“Those who speak up, express their opinions, or hold different views must not be made to live in fear,” Obi said.
He further stressed that freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed and must be protected regardless of political, ethnic, religious or ideological differences.
“Our Constitution guarantees every Nigerian the fundamental right to freedom of expression. That right must be protected for all, regardless of our differences,” he stated.
The NDC presidential candidate expressed condolences to Dan Shagamu’s family, friends, colleagues and followers, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for those mourning his death.
The killing now places a fresh responsibility on Kano authorities and security agencies to answer critical questions surrounding the circumstances of the commentator’s death and demonstrate that Nigerians can express their views without fear of violent reprisal.
