Kwankwaso Warns Benue Govt Over Attack on Peter Obi’s Convoy, Alerts International Community
Former Kano State Governor Vice Presidential candidate of the NDC Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has condemned the reported attack and blockade of the convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his journey to Benue State.
Kwankwaso described the incident as a disturbing development and “another dark day for our democracy,” alleging that unruly elements were deliberately mobilised to block Obi’s convoy and prevent him from entering Makurdi.
In a statement issued following the incident, Kwankwaso said the reported action constituted a serious threat to democratic freedoms, stressing that every Nigerian is constitutionally guaranteed freedom of movement.
He noted that the constitutional right to free movement should be respected regardless of political affiliation, adding that Obi, as a former governor and leading opposition figure, must be allowed to move freely and conduct political activities without intimidation or obstruction.
Kwankwaso specifically called on the Benue State Government to urgently identify those responsible for the alleged attack and ensure that they are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He further demanded that the state authorities guarantee the safety and unhindered movement of Obi and members of his entourage throughout their activities in Benue.
The former governor also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to caution state governors, particularly those elected on the platform of the ruling party, against actions or omissions capable of undermining Nigeria’s democratic process.
Kwankwaso warned that political disagreements should not be allowed to degenerate into violence, intimidation or restrictions on opposition politicians, stressing that the protection of democratic rights must remain the responsibility of all levels of government.
He equally urged the international community, diplomatic missions and election observation organisations to take note of the incident and closely monitor developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, Nigerian authorities must uphold the rule of law, protect opposition leaders and guarantee democratic freedoms as the country approaches another crucial electoral cycle.
The development is likely to heighten concerns among opposition groups over the safety of political actors and the level playing field ahead of the 2027 elections.
