ABUJA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected reports circulating in sections of the media and on social media platforms alleging that the party does not have governorship candidates in 12 states ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party, in a statement issued on September 5, 2026, by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., described the reports as false and deliberately designed to mislead Nigerians and undermine the party’s growing political presence ahead of the elections.
The NDC categorically maintained that it has duly nominated governorship candidates in all 28 states where governorship elections are scheduled to hold in 2027, insisting that the party is fully prepared for the elections.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the NDC has duly nominated and has governorship candidates in all the 28 states where governorship elections will take place in 2027,” the statement said.
The party also rejected suggestions that it is a regional political organisation, declaring that it has structures and supporters across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
In an effort to counter what it described as misinformation, the NDC specifically released the names of its governorship candidates in the 12 states allegedly identified in the reports.
According to the party, Senator Kabiru Marafa is its candidate in Zamfara State, while Rtd. Rear Admiral Ibrahim Sanusi Kasim will fly the party’s flag in Borno. In Cross River, the party listed Hon. John Odey, while Babanta Michael Okon was named for Akwa Ibom.
The party listed Nwofe Boniface as its candidate in Ebonyi State and Yakubu Solomon Ndam in Plateau State. In Katsina, the NDC named Ilu-Barde Aliyu, while Alhaji Umar Usman Besse was listed as its candidate in Kebbi State.
For Yobe, the party listed Jonga Yahaya Gabakau; Dutse Aminu Sani for Jigawa; Prof. Yahaya Mohammed Sani for Taraba; and Abdu Sidi Bomi for Niger State.
The NDC used the development to appeal to media organisations, journalists, bloggers and social media content creators to verify information before publishing reports concerning political parties and their candidates.
The party argued that responsible journalism requires proper scrutiny of sources, warning that the publication of unverified claims could undermine public confidence in the media and the democratic process.
“Journalism thrives on truth, not rumours,” the party stated, urging media practitioners to exercise greater diligence in reporting political developments ahead of the 2027 elections.
The opposition party further declared that it would remain focused on issue-based politics and would not allow what it described as sponsored misinformation to distract it from its political objectives.
The NDC said Nigerians were increasingly demanding an alternative to the existing political order and positioned itself as a platform committed to addressing the country’s security, employment, accountability and economic challenges.
It maintained that its 2027 agenda would centre on rebuilding national institutions, improving security, creating jobs and promoting accountable governance.
The party consequently called on Nigerians to join its political movement, declaring that its “rescue mission” had begun.
