Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted a suspected explosives courier carrying 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives in Zamfara State, in an operation described as a major disruption of terrorist logistics in the North-West.
The interception was carried out on Friday, August 14, 2026, by troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, during routine snap checks on vehicles in the state. The operation came as the military intensified efforts to disrupt the movement of weapons and other materials believed to be supplying terrorist groups operating across the region.
According to the Nigerian Army, the suspected courier, his vehicle and the recovered explosives have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
The explosives, identified as 20mm Super Power units, were reportedly being transported towards suspected terrorist elements operating in neighbouring Katsina State. Other reports identified the suspect as 57-year-old Sani Umar and said the consignment was allegedly being conveyed from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara to Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina.
The interception is significant because the seizure potentially prevented a large quantity of explosive materials from reaching armed groups and being deployed in attacks against civilians, security personnel and other targets.
The operation was conducted alongside other military activities in Zamfara. In Birnin Magaji Local Government Area, troops reportedly engaged terrorist elements around Garin Kaso during an offensive clearance operation. The encounter resulted in a firefight as troops moved against the group’s operational positions.
The Nigerian Army said the ongoing operations are part of sustained efforts under Operation FANSAN YAMMA to dismantle terrorist networks and disrupt their logistics and operational capabilities across the North-West.
The interception also highlights the importance of road checks and intelligence-led operations in tackling the movement of weapons and explosives. Security officials have increasingly focused on disrupting terrorist supply chains, recognising that preventing weapons from reaching armed groups can significantly reduce their capacity to carry out attacks.
Zamfara remains one of the states most affected by armed banditry, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West. The wider region has continued to experience attacks despite sustained military operations and security interventions.
The latest development comes shortly after Nigerian troops rescued 33 people abducted by gunmen in Zamfara State. The victims were reportedly recovered after troops engaged the abductors, forcing them to abandon their hostages and flee into surrounding bushes.
Meanwhile, the recovery of the 180 explosives has placed renewed attention on the networks responsible for moving military-grade or explosive materials to criminal groups.
Authorities are expected to investigate the origin of the explosives, identify other individuals involved in the alleged supply chain and determine their intended recipients.
The Nigerian Army has continued to urge members of the public to provide timely information that could assist security agencies in identifying suspicious movements and disrupting terrorist and criminal activities.
