Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P, has attracted criticism following comments he made about the relevance of indigenous Nigerian languages.
The former P-Square member made the remarks after a fan asked whether his children could also speak Igbo, following his post about their fluency in French.
While sharing his thoughts on social media, Okoye said seeing his children communicate confidently in French had made him consider owning a home in Paris, where he was spending time with his family.
Responding to a question about his children’s knowledge of Igbo, the singer questioned the usefulness of Nigerian languages, a comment that generated reactions from many social media users.
Several critics expressed disappointment over the statement, arguing that Nigerian indigenous languages play an important role in preserving culture and identity. Some users also pointed out that Okoye’s music career has featured Nigerian languages, including Igbo and Yoruba, which have contributed to the appeal of many songs.
The comments have continued to fuel conversations about language preservation, cultural identity, and the importance of promoting indigenous languages among younger generations.
Okoye has not issued a further statement addressing the reactions to his remarks.
