He references a June 1, 2026 deadline reportedly set by Judge Beryl A. Howell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia for the FBI and the DEA to release investigative records concerning Tinubu. According to the letter, the deadline passed after years of delays, despite previous court orders directing disclosure.
Amachree notes that the public record reflects the 1993 civil forfeiture of $460,000 linked to accounts associated with Tinubu in connection with a narcotics-related money laundering investigation in the United States. He also acknowledges that Tinubu was never criminally convicted in the matter and that the forfeiture was a civil proceeding rather than a criminal conviction.
The letter argues that compliance with the court’s disclosure order would serve the interests of transparency and public accountability. Amachree contends that continued withholding of the records raises questions about consistency in the application of U.S. law, drawing a comparison with the United States’ handling of other foreign leaders accused of narcotics-related offenses.
Amachree also expresses concern over the influence of senior U.S. officials with business interests in Nigeria on Washington’s policy toward the country, suggesting that such relationships deserve public scrutiny.
In addition, the letter references ongoing legal disputes in Nigeria concerning Tinubu’s academic records, while stating that those matters should be resolved through the courts.
