2027: NDC Welcomes 23 Defecting Lawmakers as Obi, Kwankwaso Receive New Entrants

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has recorded a major political boost following the defection of 23 lawmakers into the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The defecting lawmakers were formally received at a high-level gathering attended by the party’s presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, alongside prominent northern political leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The development is being viewed by political observers as a significant expansion of the NDC’s growing national coalition, especially as opposition forces continue to realign across the country ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Speaking during the reception, party leaders described the mass defection as a strong indication that Nigerians are seeking a new political direction anchored on competence, accountability, national unity, and people-oriented governance.
Supporters at the event cheered the lawmakers for what they described as a courageous decision to align with a movement focused on rebuilding Nigeria’s economy, strengthening democratic institutions, and restoring public confidence in leadership.
The presence of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at the event further underscored ongoing efforts within the opposition bloc to consolidate support across different regions of the country.
Party insiders revealed that the NDC has continued to witness increasing interest from politicians, youth groups, professionals, and grassroots mobilizers who believe the party offers a credible alternative for Nigerians ahead of 2027.
Analysts say the defection of the lawmakers could reshape political calculations in several states and constituencies, particularly as coalition talks and strategic alliances intensify nationwide.
The NDC leadership reaffirmed its commitment to building an inclusive political platform capable of delivering what it called “a government driven by integrity, competence, and national development.”
