Tinubu Urges New Ambassadors to Drive Economic Diplomacy

President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigeria’s newly appointed ambassadors to prioritize economic diplomacy as they represent the nation abroad. Speaking at the conclusion of a three-day induction course organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tinubu emphasized the importance of shifting the country’s diplomatic focus from foreign aid to attracting investments.

The induction, held in Abuja, trained both career diplomats and non-career appointees, including Reno Omokri, assigned to Mexico City, and Femi Fani-Kayode, posted to Germany, on trade promotion, security, and consular services. These key appointments are part of 65 ambassadorial postings approved by Tinubu in March 2026 and confirmed by the Senate late last year.

Tinubu urged the ambassadors to counter negative narratives about Nigeria and actively promote the country’s interests overseas. Supporters have praised high-profile appointees like Omokri and Fani-Kayode as patriots capable of enhancing Nigeria’s global image, though critics have raised concerns about delays in the nomination process and the suitability of certain nominees.

With over 25 ambassadors already securing host country approvals, the government aims to fill long-standing diplomatic vacancies and boost Nigeria’s international presence amid ongoing economic challenges.
