Tension in Sokoto as Residents Protest Hunger, Economic Hardship

Residents in parts of Sokoto reportedly staged a protest over worsening economic hardship and rising hunger, with demonstrators expressing frustration over the soaring cost of living and insecurity affecting the country.

According to circulating reports and videos on social media, some protesters were seen around the palace of the Sultan of Sokoto, voicing anger over the deteriorating economic situation and demanding urgent government intervention. Some demonstrators were also heard chanting political slogans in support of Peter Obi, while others allegedly called for drastic political change.

However, there has been no official confirmation that the palace was “invaded,” and authorities are yet to release a comprehensive statement regarding the scale of the protest or claims surrounding calls for military intervention.

The development comes amid growing nationwide concerns over inflation, food prices, unemployment, and insecurity, which have continued to fuel public dissatisfaction across several states. Previous hunger-related protests had also been recorded in Sokoto during nationwide demonstrations against hardship and bad governance.

Political analysts warn that increasing economic pressure on citizens could trigger more civil unrest if urgent measures are not taken to address living conditions and restore public confidence in governance.

Meanwhile, security agencies are reportedly monitoring the situation to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the state.
