Renewed Hope ‘A Scam’: Aregbesola Calls for Tinubu’s Resignation at ADC Convention

Former Minister of Interior and National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, citing worsening insecurity and deepening economic hardship across Nigeria.

Aregbesola made the remarks while addressing delegates at the ongoing ADC National Convention in Abuja, where he delivered a scathing critique of the administration’s policies and performance. He described the President’s “Renewed Hope” agenda as “a scam,” arguing that Nigerians have seen little improvement nearly three years into the current administration.

In his address, Aregbesola accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of undermining democratic principles and fostering what he described as political manipulation and institutional compromise. He stressed that the ADC remains rooted in the aspirations of Nigerians and the constitutional right to political association.

“The ADC derives its existence from the aspirations and values of the Nigerian people, who are tired of deceit and colossal mismanagement,” he stated, adding that the party is on a “rescue mission” to reclaim the country from what he called the ruling party’s “strangulating grasp.”

On the economy, Aregbesola highlighted the sharp depreciation of the naira, noting that the exchange rate has worsened significantly since 2023, alongside soaring fuel prices. He argued that these developments have had devastating consequences in an import-dependent economy, pushing transportation and living costs beyond the reach of many citizens.

He also criticised the government’s handling of the power sector, saying electricity supply has deteriorated despite campaign promises. According to him, some parts of the country now receive only a few hours of electricity daily, with others experiencing prolonged blackouts.

Aregbesola further raised concerns over rising insecurity, condemning ongoing violent attacks and accusing the administration of lacking empathy in responding to national tragedies. He warned that the country is “drifting” and urged citizens to take decisive action.

“Ordinarily, an honest president who has failed on key promises should step down,” he said, warning against what he described as a desperate attempt to retain power at all costs.

He also pointed to growing social challenges, including an increase in out-of-school children and rising poverty levels, which he said reflect systemic failure.

The convention, attended by over 300 delegates, is expected to deliberate on key party matters, including the affirmation of the National Working Committee under David Mark and the adoption of a revised constitution and manifesto.

Aregbesola concluded with a call for collective action, urging Nigerians to align with the ADC’s vision, warning that neutrality in the current political climate amounts to complicity.
