The Federal Government has ordered a full investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Niger State.
The development followed the arrest of suspected illegal miners during enforcement operations conducted by the NSCDC in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas of Minna on September 15 and 16, 2026.
Reports initially put the number of deceased suspects at no fewer than 33, while later reports cited 37 and the latest PUNCH headline put the figure at 40. The NSCDC itself has not released a definitive death toll.
The deaths were discovered in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, after the suspects had been detained at an NSCDC facility in Minna.
The Niger State Commandant of the NSCDC, Suberu Aniviye, initially attributed the deaths to a suspected disease outbreak. However, the national headquarters of the Corps cautioned against reaching conclusions on the cause of death before medical and laboratory examinations are completed.
Following the incident, the NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, ordered the establishment of a high-powered investigative team to determine what happened.
The panel, led by the Deputy Commandant-General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation, was directed to examine several aspects of the incident, including the condition of the suspects when they were arrested, the period they spent in custody, the conditions under which they were detained and the medical attention they received.
The investigative team is also expected to examine other circumstances surrounding the deaths and establish the actual sequence of events.
The Corps said the bodies had been deposited at the General Hospital in Minna for medical examination to establish the cause of death. It specifically warned that reports linking the deaths to a particular disease remained unconfirmed pending medical and laboratory findings.
The incident has also triggered a separate police investigation. The Niger State Police Command ordered its Criminal Investigation Department to investigate the deaths and determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A survivor, Dauda Shehu, however, gave a different account of the conditions inside the detention facility. In an account reported by the Associated Press, Shehu alleged that about 65 detainees had been packed into a poorly ventilated cell and said some people began struggling for air.
His account has not been established as the official cause of the deaths, and authorities have said that the outcome of medical examinations would be required before determining what caused the fatalities.
The Federal Government subsequently escalated its response.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo ordered the immediate suspension of the Niger State NSCDC Commandant, Suberu Aniviye, pending a full investigation into the incident.
The minister said the government considered the incident serious and directed that the investigation should be conducted transparently. He also called on members of the public to remain calm while the authorities work to establish the facts.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago also announced three days of mourning following the deaths. The development has generated concern among relatives of the deceased and renewed attention to the conditions under which people arrested during security and enforcement operations are detained.
The arrests themselves were part of an NSCDC operation targeting illegal mining activities in the state. Illegal mining remains a major concern in several parts of Nigeria because of its environmental, economic and security implications.
The authorities are now expected to determine not only the medical cause of the deaths but also whether the suspects received appropriate medical care and whether the detention conditions met applicable standards.
The investigation will therefore be closely watched by the families of the deceased and the wider public as government agencies seek to establish the circumstances that led to the deaths.
For now, authorities have not issued a final medical explanation for the fatalities, and the discrepancy in reported numbers also remains unresolved. The findings of the investigations and medical examinations are expected to provide clearer answers.
