Peter Obi’s Lecture Engagements Face Repeated Disruptions Across Nigerian Universities

Former Anambra State governor and opposition figure Peter Obi has reportedly encountered a series of lecture cancellations at Nigerian universities, raising concerns about access to public institutions for political figures.

The latest incident occurred at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, where a planned engagement was cancelled shortly before Obi was scheduled to attend a political summit in Ibadan. Similar disruptions have also been reported at his alma mater, University of Nigeria Nsukka.

Reacting to the developments, activist Aisha Yesufu alleged a pattern of restrictions by government-linked institutions, claiming that Obi has faced repeated barriers not only in delivering lectures but also in making donations.

She cited an instance involving Government Girls Secondary School Chibok—the site of the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping—where an effort to provide computers and printers was reportedly declined. Local activist Manasseh Allen also described the school’s condition as poor, confirming that support offers had been rejected.

University authorities and relevant government officials have yet to issue formal responses to the allegations.

Observers say the incidents highlight growing tensions around opposition access to public spaces in Nigeria. The situation contrasts with Obi’s international engagements, including speaking appearances at institutions such as Harvard University and University of Oxford, where his lectures have proceeded without disruption.

The developments continue to spark debate over academic independence, political neutrality, and freedom of engagement within Nigeria’s public institutions.
