Presidential hopeful of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Wednesday joined Catholic clergy and faithful from across Nigeria for the requiem Mass and burial of the late Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, describing his death as a profound loss to the Church and society.
In a message shared on his X handle, Obi said the passing of the late bishop was deeply painful to his family, the Diocese of Abakaliki and the Universal Church, noting that his life remained a shining testimony of dedicated service to God and humanity.
According to Obi, the homily delivered by Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji reflected on the inevitability of death and celebrated the late Bishop Chukwu as a courageous and devoted shepherd whose life was marked by sacrifice, service and unwavering fidelity to his calling.
Obi also referenced remarks by Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, who described the late cleric as a monumental loss to the state and a pathfinder whose influence and leadership transcended religious boundaries.
He noted that Archbishop Ugorji’s message further emphasized the moral demands of leadership and the commitment expected of those entrusted with responsibilities both in the Church and public service.
The former Anambra governor further acknowledged the presence of Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, who represented the Holy Father and underscored the unity of the Universal Church during the period of mourning.
Obi also commended Bishop Ernest Obodo for his leadership and efforts in ensuring a peaceful and hitch-free funeral ceremony for the late bishop.
