Osun 2026: DeeOne Puts Davido on the Spot Over Support for Adeleke

Nigerian comedian and media personality DeeOne has challenged Afrobeats singer Davido to publicly highlight the achievements of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke as political activities intensify ahead of the state’s 2026 governorship election.

DeeOne’s challenge has sparked fresh discussion about the basis for celebrity involvement in Nigerian politics, particularly when prominent entertainers publicly support political candidates.

The comedian reportedly questioned whether Davido could campaign for Governor Adeleke by presenting specific projects and policies delivered by the administration.

The remarks have attracted attention largely because of Davido’s enormous popularity and his family’s connection to Osun politics. Davido’s uncle, Ademola Adeleke, is the incumbent governor, while his father, Adedeji Adeleke, is a prominent businessman from the state.

Davido has previously shown support for his uncle, making his political position in the forthcoming Osun election a subject of public interest.

DeeOne’s comments also touch on a wider question concerning the role of celebrities in election campaigns. Supporters of celebrity participation argue that entertainers have the same democratic rights as other citizens and can use their platforms to encourage political participation. Critics, however, often demand that endorsements focus on candidates’ records, policies and measurable results.

Governor Adeleke’s administration has promoted projects and programmes in areas including infrastructure, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare and public-sector development. His supporters have pointed to these initiatives as evidence of progress since he assumed office.

Opposition politicians and critics, meanwhile, have continued to assess the administration’s performance and raise questions about its policies and governance record.

The debate is becoming increasingly relevant as political parties and aspirants prepare for the 2026 Osun governorship contest. Campaign messages are expected to focus heavily on the performance of the incumbent administration and competing visions for the state.

For Davido, any campaign role would likely attract significant attention because of his national and international profile, particularly among younger voters.

DeeOne’s challenge has therefore shifted attention from celebrity endorsement itself to the evidence that should accompany political support.

As the election approaches, the growing involvement of public figures is expected to generate further debate over political accountability, campaign messaging and the influence of celebrity culture on Nigerian elections.
