Open Letter Calls on King Charles to Postpone Potential Tinubu State Visit

Stockholm, February 23, 2026 — A Nigerian political scientist, Kio Amachree, has issued an open letter to Charles III, urging the British monarch to cancel or postpone any proposed state visit or formal reception for Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In the letter, Amachree cited concerns about Nigeria’s political stability, security challenges, and economic hardship, arguing that a state visit at this time would send the wrong signal about the United Kingdom’s stance on governance and democratic accountability in Nigeria.

Amachree, who identified himself as a descendant of prominent Nigerian statesmen and a former student of Eton College, said his appeal was rooted in what he described as a longstanding historical and institutional connection between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He referenced his family’s public service background and his personal ties to British institutions in underscoring the seriousness of his request.

The open letter outlined several concerns, including allegations of corruption surrounding President Tinubu, questions raised by critics about the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic processes, and fears of heightened political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections. Amachree argued that a high-profile royal engagement could be interpreted as an endorsement of the current administration at a time of significant domestic debate.

He also raised broader issues about insecurity, inflation, and public dissatisfaction in Nigeria, suggesting that a ceremonial visit could provoke public backlash among citizens facing economic and social challenges.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Buckingham Palace nor Nigerian government officials have publicly responded to the letter. There has been no official confirmation of a scheduled state visit.

The development comes amid ongoing discussions within Nigeria and the international community regarding governance, democratic reforms, and diplomatic relations between Abuja and London.
