SOKOTO — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has paid a courtesy visit to the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’adu Abubakar III, shortly after arriving in Sokoto State.
Obi was accompanied to the Sultan’s palace by members of his delegation, including his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, as part of engagements in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections. Kwankwaso later disclosed that the delegation sought the Sultan’s prayers and goodwill.
Reacting to the visit, RMK, who accompanied Obi, expressed appreciation to the Sultan for what he described as a warm reception, exemplary leadership and gracious hospitality.
The visit comes amid the NDC presidential ticket’s ongoing consultations and grassroots engagements across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
Obi has previously said that traditional and religious institutions would have an important role in promoting national unity. Earlier this month, he said that, if elected, he would spend the Sallah holiday in Sokoto with the Sultan as part of efforts to foster dialogue and strengthen bonds among Nigerians.
At a town hall meeting in Sokoto on Monday, Obi subsequently identified education, security and national unity as major priorities of his proposed administration, while Kwankwaso highlighted the security challenges confronting communities in the North-West.
The courtesy visit therefore formed part of the NDC delegation’s wider engagement with political, traditional and community stakeholders as the party continues its mobilisation ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
