The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has intensified its campaign against illegal petroleum activities in Anambra State, arresting two suspects allegedly involved in the illicit trade of petroleum products.
The suspects were apprehended during an operation carried out by the NSCDC as part of ongoing efforts to combat oil-related crimes, protect critical national assets and curb the illegal distribution of petroleum products.
According to the Corps, the operation followed intelligence reports on suspected illegal dealings in petroleum products within the state. Security operatives subsequently raided the location, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of petroleum products believed to have been stored or traded in violation of existing regulations.
The NSCDC stated that preliminary investigations are underway to determine the source of the products, identify possible collaborators and establish whether the suspects are linked to a wider network involved in illegal petroleum activities.
Officials reiterated that the Corps remains committed to enforcing laws regulating the storage, transportation and sale of petroleum products, warning that individuals engaged in illegal refining, diversion, hoarding or unauthorized distribution would face prosecution.
The agency noted that illegal petroleum trading poses significant risks to public safety, including fire outbreaks, environmental pollution and economic losses to the nation. It added that such activities also undermine legitimate businesses operating within the downstream petroleum sector.
Security experts have long identified illicit petroleum trade as a major challenge in parts of Nigeria, citing its links to smuggling, pipeline vandalism, product diversion and organized criminal networks.
Industry analysts argue that stronger enforcement, improved monitoring systems and greater collaboration among security agencies are essential to tackling the problem and protecting Nigeria’s energy infrastructure.
Community leaders have also been urged to support security agencies by providing timely information on suspicious activities involving petroleum products. The NSCDC emphasized that public cooperation remains critical to disrupting illegal supply chains and preventing accidents associated with unsafe storage facilities.
The arrests come as authorities continue nationwide efforts to sanitize the petroleum sector and ensure that petroleum products are distributed through approved channels in compliance with regulatory standards.
The Corps assured residents that investigations would be conducted thoroughly and professionally, while anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
