The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested 121 traffic offenders during a special enforcement operation across Anambra State, as part of efforts to improve road safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
According to the FRSC, the operation targeted motorists and commercial drivers found violating various provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations. The exercise forms part of the Corps’ ongoing campaign to reduce road crashes, promote responsible driving and enhance safety for all road users.
Officials disclosed that the offenders were apprehended for a range of traffic violations, including dangerous driving, speeding, overloading, failure to use seat belts, driving without valid licences, vehicle overloading, use of worn-out tyres and other infractions considered major contributors to road accidents.
The Corps said several vehicles were also impounded during the operation pending the resolution of identified offences in accordance with existing traffic laws.
The Anambra State Command of the FRSC reiterated that enforcement exercises are not intended to punish motorists but to encourage compliance with road safety regulations and protect lives and property.
Command officials urged drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, observe speed limits and comply with all traffic rules to reduce the risk of accidents.
Road safety experts note that human error remains one of the leading causes of road crashes in Nigeria, with excessive speed, reckless driving, fatigue and poor vehicle maintenance accounting for a significant proportion of traffic fatalities.
The FRSC has continued to intensify public enlightenment campaigns alongside enforcement activities, encouraging motorists to cultivate safe driving habits and regularly maintain their vehicles.
Transport stakeholders have welcomed sustained enforcement operations but stressed the need for improved road infrastructure, better traffic management and continuous driver education to complement law enforcement efforts.
They also called on commercial transport operators to prioritise passenger safety by adhering strictly to vehicle maintenance standards and ensuring that drivers are properly trained and licensed.
Residents and road users in Anambra have expressed mixed reactions to the operation. While many commended the FRSC for enforcing traffic regulations, others urged the Corps to ensure that enforcement remains professional, transparent and free from harassment.
The operation comes amid renewed nationwide efforts by the FRSC to reduce road traffic crashes and improve compliance with safety regulations, particularly during periods of increased vehicular movement.
The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining enforcement and public awareness initiatives aimed at making Nigerian roads safer. It warned that motorists who violate traffic regulations would continue to face appropriate sanctions as part of broader efforts to promote a culture of responsible road use.
Authorities encouraged all road users to cooperate with traffic officials, obey road signs and prioritise safety, noting that compliance with traffic laws remains essential to reducing preventable accidents and saving lives across the country.
