Fresh tensions have reportedly emerged within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the North-West, as some party leaders accuse former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of attempting to dominate the party’s structure in Kano State.
According to the aggrieved leaders, Kwankwaso and members of the Kwankwasiyya movement have allegedly sought to consolidate control of the party’s leadership positions and decision-making processes, leaving little room for members who are not aligned with the Kwankwasiyya political bloc.
The critics claim that the emerging structure risks alienating long-standing party members and stakeholders who joined the NDC from different political backgrounds. They argue that the party was established as a broad-based platform and should not be controlled by any single political tendency or personality.
Some of the leaders expressed concern that the perceived concentration of influence could undermine internal democracy and weaken the party’s efforts to build a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Supporters of Kwankwaso, however, reject the allegations, insisting that the former governor’s influence reflects his political strength and grassroots support in Kano and across the North-West. They argue that individuals who bring substantial political structures into a party naturally command significant influence and should not be faulted for mobilizing supporters.
The dispute comes at a sensitive time for the NDC, which has been positioning itself as a major opposition force following the emergence of Peter Obi as its presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 election.
Political analysts note that disagreements over party structures and leadership positions are common during periods of rapid expansion, especially when parties absorb influential politicians and their supporters from different political traditions.
The development also highlights the challenge of balancing regional political interests within a national opposition movement. Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically significant states, and control of party structures there could have major implications for campaign organization and voter mobilization.
As of now, there has been no indication that the dispute has escalated into formal disciplinary action or legal proceedings. Party leaders are expected to engage in consultations aimed at preserving unity and preventing internal disagreements from affecting preparations for future elections.
Observers say how the NDC manages such internal tensions could influence perceptions of its ability to govern a diverse coalition and present a credible alternative in the 2027 political contest.
