Troops of the Nigerian Army have disrupted separate terrorist operations in Zamfara State and rescued 16 civilians who were reportedly being taken away by armed attackers.
The operations were carried out in Kaura Namoda and Tsafe Local Government Areas of the state as part of ongoing military efforts to tackle terrorism, kidnapping and other forms of insecurity in the North-West.
According to reports, troops deployed in Kaura Namoda responded to a distress call in the early hours of Friday, August 28, after receiving information about an ongoing abduction attempt. The soldiers moved to the area and engaged the attackers, forcing them to abandon their operation.
The intervention resulted in the rescue of civilians who had been caught up in the attempted mass abduction. A separate operation in Tsafe also reportedly prevented another terrorist attack and helped secure the release of additional victims.
The successful interventions are part of wider operations by troops under Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, which is responsible for military operations against terrorist and bandit groups operating across parts of the region.
The latest development is significant for Zamfara, a state that has experienced persistent attacks, kidnappings and displacement linked to armed groups. Security operations in the state have increasingly focused on disrupting attacks before they are completed and rescuing victims held by criminal groups.
Military operations in the North-West have also included raids on suspected terrorist hideouts, recovery of weapons and arrests of individuals suspected of providing support to criminal networks. Recent operations across neighbouring Kaduna and Katsina have similarly targeted terrorist infrastructure and collaborators.
The rescue of the 16 victims is expected to provide relief to affected families and communities, while also demonstrating the importance of rapid responses to distress calls and intelligence gathering.
