NBC Warns Broadcasters Over Election Code Violations Ahead of Polls

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has issued a formal warning to television and radio stations across Nigeria over increasing violations of the country’s broadcasting code, particularly in political and news programming.

In a statement released on April 17, 2026, the commission expressed concern about what it described as a surge in unprofessional conduct by media practitioners. The regulator highlighted instances where news anchors present personal opinions as factual reporting, engage in confrontational or bullying behavior toward guests, and allow the broadcast of inflammatory statements from political actors.

According to the NBC, such practices constitute breaches of established guidelines, including bias, hate speech, and lack of editorial balance. The commission warned that these trends risk eroding public trust in the media and could heighten tensions as the country approaches upcoming elections.

The agency further emphasized its commitment to enforcing compliance, noting that sanctions would be imposed on stations found guilty of violating the code. It stressed that adherence to professional standards is essential to maintaining fairness, accuracy, and national cohesion during the electoral period.

The warning follows the circulation of viral broadcast clips that have sparked widespread debate. One such clip involved a presenter on Channels Television rigorously questioning a government supporter over policy failures, while heated discussions on Arise Television have also drawn attention for their critical stance on the administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

Public reaction has been divided. Some viewers have praised the media for holding public officials accountable through tough questioning, while others argue that the tone and content of such programs cross professional boundaries.

Human rights group Amnesty International criticized the NBC’s directive, warning that it could be interpreted as an attempt to stifle press freedom and silence dissenting voices.

As Nigeria moves closer to its next electoral cycle, the development underscores the growing tension between media regulation and freedom of expression in the country’s democratic landscape.
