Naira Rebounds Against Dollar as Currency Regains Ground Against US Dollar

The Nigerian naira returned to an appreciating trend against the US dollar on Thursday, September 10, 2026, providing a fresh boost to the local currency after recent fluctuations in the foreign exchange market.

The development comes amid continued attention on Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, with investors and businesses closely monitoring the naira’s performance against major international currencies.

The naira’s latest movement is significant because exchange-rate changes have direct implications for the cost of imported goods, foreign-denominated obligations, business operations and consumer prices. A stronger naira can reduce the local-currency cost of imports and potentially ease some inflationary pressures, although the impact depends on how sustained the appreciation becomes.

The currency market is also being influenced by developments in global financial markets. Rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions have increased volatility across international markets. Brent crude climbed sharply on Thursday, while the US dollar also strengthened against several major currencies.

For Nigeria, movements in crude oil prices are particularly important because oil exports remain a major source of foreign-exchange earnings. Stronger oil receipts can improve dollar liquidity and provide support for the naira, provided the additional foreign exchange reaches the domestic market.

The Central Bank of Nigeria has continued efforts to improve transparency and liquidity in the foreign exchange market following reforms introduced under President Bola Tinubu. The reforms moved Nigeria toward a more market-driven exchange-rate system, allowing the naira to respond more closely to demand and supply conditions.

The latest appreciation will therefore be closely watched by businesses, investors and consumers. Sustained stability in the naira could improve planning for companies that depend on imported raw materials and equipment, while reducing uncertainty around foreign-exchange costs.

However, analysts caution that a single day of appreciation does not necessarily establish a lasting trend. Oil prices, foreign-exchange liquidity, capital flows, inflation, monetary policy and broader global economic conditions will continue to influence the naira-dollar exchange rate.

The naira’s latest recovery consequently offers some positive momentum, but market participants will be watching subsequent trading sessions to determine whether the appreciation can be sustained.
