The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate for the forthcoming gubernatorial election.
The announcement marks a significant development within the NDC’s political structure in Kano, one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states, and is expected to further strengthen the party’s support base ahead of the polls.
Mustapha Kwankwaso is the biological son of former Kano State governor and former presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who remains one of the most prominent political figures in northern Nigeria and a key stakeholder within the NDC.
Party officials said the choice of Mustapha as deputy governorship candidate was reached after consultations among party leaders, stakeholders, and grassroots supporters across the state.
According to sources within the party, the decision was influenced by considerations including political experience, youth representation, party loyalty, and the need to build a ticket capable of attracting broad support across Kano’s diverse political landscape.
The Gwarzo-Kwankwaso ticket is expected to leverage the political influence and extensive grassroots networks associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement, which has remained a major force in Kano politics for over a decade.
Political observers note that the inclusion of Mustapha Kwankwaso could help consolidate support among loyalists of the Kwankwasiyya movement while also projecting a youthful image for the party’s campaign.
Supporters of the decision have described the selection as strategic, arguing that Mustapha’s familiarity with the political structures built by his father and his involvement in party activities position him to contribute meaningfully to governance if elected.
They also contend that the move reflects the NDC’s efforts to blend experience with youthful participation in leadership.
However, critics have questioned whether the choice could fuel concerns about political dynasties and the concentration of influence within a small circle of political families.
Some analysts argue that political parties must strike a balance between recognizing competence and avoiding perceptions of favoritism or hereditary succession in democratic politics.
Despite such concerns, NDC leaders insist that the selection was based on merit, consultation, and the broader interests of the party.
The announcement comes as political parties across the country continue preparations for the 2027 elections, with candidates unveiling running mates and refining campaign strategies.
Kano State is expected to remain a key battleground in the forthcoming elections due to its large voting population and significant influence on national political outcomes.
Analysts believe the emergence of the Gwarzo-Kwankwaso ticket is likely to reshape political calculations in the state, particularly given Senator Kwankwaso’s enduring popularity among many voters and his role in mobilizing support for the NDC.
As campaigns gradually gather momentum, attention will focus on how the NDC ticket positions itself against rival parties and whether the combination of Aminu Gwarzo and Mustapha Kwankwaso can translate political goodwill into electoral success.
Party supporters have expressed optimism that the new ticket will strengthen the NDC’s prospects in Kano, while political opponents are expected to scrutinize the choice as the contest for the state’s top office intensifies.
