Nollywood actor and skit maker Akinyoola Ayoola, popularly known as Kamo State, has explained why actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele was absent from the Lagos premiere of his debut cinema movie, Star Lomo.
Akindele’s absence from the September 20 premiere attracted attention on social media, with some users questioning whether the development signalled a disagreement between the actress and Kamo, who have maintained a close relationship in recent years.
Kamo, however, dismissed the speculation, saying Akindele was simply outside Nigeria when the premiere took place. He said the actress had spoken with him about the event and remained willing to support the movie.
“We’re on good terms,” Kamo said, while explaining that Akindele’s absence was because she was not in the country. He also appealed to the public not to speculate about their personal relationship.
The actor said he wanted attention to remain on Star Lomo rather than on speculation concerning his relationship with Akindele. He added that both of them had already discussed the matter and that she would continue to support the film.
The controversy gained traction partly because of Akindele’s previous support for Kamo. The actress has featured him in projects including Everybody Loves Jenifa, Aiyetoro Town Season 2 and Behind The Scenes. She has also publicly supported some of his personal and professional milestones.
Akindele was reportedly in Ghana around the time of the premiere, where she was with singer Waje, who features in her forthcoming movie, The Four.
Kamo’s clarification is significant because it seeks to separate social media speculation from the circumstances surrounding the actress’ absence and redirect attention to his first cinema project.
Star Lomo marks an important step in Kamo State’s transition from online skit-making to mainstream cinema. His association with Akindele has also played a notable role in his growing visibility within Nollywood.
