BERLIN — Germany has recorded an estimated 14,000 heat-related deaths this summer, marking the highest level recorded in the country in years as Europe continues to experience a succession of severe and prolonged heatwaves.
The figures, released by Germany’s public health authority, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), highlight the growing human cost of extreme temperatures across the continent. The latest estimate surpasses Germany’s previous major heat-mortality peak of about 8,900 deaths recorded in 2018.
Particularly alarming is the concentration of deaths during a single period. According to the RKI, approximately 9,600 people died during one week in late June, when temperatures in parts of Germany climbed above 40°C.
Health officials said the majority of those who died were aged 75 and above, underscoring the particular vulnerability of elderly people to prolonged extreme heat.
The RKI stressed that heat-related mortality does not necessarily mean that extreme temperatures are recorded as the direct cause of death. While some victims die from conditions such as heatstroke, extreme heat can also aggravate existing cardiovascular, respiratory and other medical conditions, ultimately contributing to death.
Consequently, health authorities rely on statistical models to estimate the number of deaths associated with extreme heat because heat exposure is frequently not listed as the underlying cause on death certificates.
Europe Faces Rising Death Toll
Germany’s experience is part of a wider European crisis.
Spain has reported nearly 4,500 heat-related deaths since June 1, while French health authorities have recorded more than 7,300 excess deaths over the same period, according to figures reported on Thursday.
The World Health Organisation has also warned of the significant health consequences of the continent’s extreme temperatures. Its assessment of the 2026 European heatwave said prolonged and widespread extreme temperatures have produced substantial population exposure and increased heat-related illness and mortality.
Preliminary European mortality-monitoring data estimated approximately 10,650 excess deaths between June 22 and June 28 alone, with more than 9,000 occurring among people aged 65 and older. Across two weeks of peak temperatures, more than 14,000 excess deaths were estimated across Europe.
Heat, Drought and Wildfires
The extreme weather has extended beyond the immediate health emergency.
Germany has also faced severe drought conditions, wildfires, reduced agricultural yields and falling water levels in major rivers used for commercial shipping. Across Europe, repeated heatwaves have contributed to dangerous fire conditions and placed additional pressure on hospitals, emergency services and other public infrastructure.
Scientists have linked the increasing intensity of European heatwaves to human-driven climate change. A World Weather Attribution assessment of the June heatwave concluded that climate change substantially increased the likelihood and intensity of the extreme temperatures experienced across Europe.
Calls for Stronger Climate Adaptation
The record mortality figures have intensified calls in Germany for stronger measures to protect citizens from extreme heat.
Government ministers have called for greater investment in climate adaptation, urban planning, building standards and measures to protect workers from excessive temperatures. Former German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has also argued that municipalities require additional financial support to implement effective heat-protection measures.
The latest figures have therefore transformed the European heatwave from a weather story into a major public-health and climate-policy issue.
With temperatures repeatedly reaching dangerous levels across several countries, experts warn that heat preparedness can no longer be treated as an occasional emergency measure. Heat-health warning systems, accessible cooling facilities, better urban planning, protection for outdoor workers and targeted support for elderly and vulnerable populations are increasingly being viewed as essential components of public safety.
For Germany, the estimated 14,000 heat-related deaths represent a stark warning of the consequences of prolonged extreme temperatures. For Europe as a whole, the figures underscore a broader challenge: how governments can adapt public-health systems and infrastructure to a climate in which severe heatwaves are becoming increasingly frequent and intense.
The summer of 2026 is therefore emerging not merely as one of Europe’s hottest periods, but as a sobering reminder that extreme heat can become a silent and deadly public-health emergency.
