Fr Mbaka Says Nigeria’s Crisis Is Spiritual, Defends Youths Supporting Peter Obi

Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria, has said Nigeria’s challenges should not be blamed on young people supporting former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

Mbaka, in a recent statement, described the country’s situation as having a spiritual dimension while urging Nigerians to look beyond political disagreements when discussing the choices of young people.

The cleric’s comments are notable because of his previously strained public relationship with Obi. In 2022, Mbaka criticised the former governor during a church programme, prompting widespread reactions from Obi’s supporters and a response from the Catholic Diocese of Enugu. He later apologised to Obi and his supporters.

At the time, Mbaka said Obi remained his friend and brother and explained that his concerns were linked to the hardship faced by Nigerian youths. He also said he supported good governance rather than a particular political party or candidate.

His latest position comes amid renewed political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Peter Obi remaining a prominent figure in discussions about Nigeria’s political future. Obi has previously said he considers Mbaka his priest and “father in faith,” despite their disagreements.

The comments are significant because young Nigerians have played an increasingly visible role in political discussions, particularly through social media, grassroots mobilisation and civic advocacy. Debates over their political choices have frequently become part of wider arguments about leadership, governance and the country’s economic difficulties.

Mbaka’s remarks also highlight the intersection of religion, politics and public opinion in Nigeria, where influential religious figures can shape conversations around national issues.

As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, discussions about political support, youth participation and the causes of Nigeria’s challenges are expected to remain prominent. Mbaka’s latest comments add another perspective to the ongoing debate over how Nigerians should understand the country’s political and socioeconomic problems.
