Former UNILORIN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali Dies at 68

Nigeria’s academic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, who passed away at the age of 68.

The renowned scholar, veterinary medicine expert, and university administrator reportedly died in the early hours of Saturday at his residence in Oloje Estate, Ilorin, Kwara State. Family sources said the former vice-chancellor was not known to have been seriously ill before his death, making the news a shock to many colleagues, students, and associates.

Professor Ambali served as the ninth Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin between 2012 and 2017, a period during which the institution strengthened its reputation as one of Nigeria’s most stable and academically respected universities. His tenure was marked by efforts to promote academic excellence, institutional discipline, research development, and administrative efficiency.

At the time of his passing, Ambali was serving as the Chairman and Pro-Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, where he continued to contribute to the advancement of higher education in Nigeria.

Born on November 29, 1957, in Ilorin, Kwara State, Ambali began his educational journey at Pakata Primary School before attending Government Secondary School, Jalingo. He later earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1981. Determined to deepen his expertise, he proceeded to the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, where he obtained both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Veterinary Medicine.

His academic career spanned more than three decades and included teaching, research, and university administration. Before joining the University of Ilorin, he lectured at the University of Maiduguri, where he built a reputation as a dedicated educator and researcher. Upon moving to UNILORIN, he rose through the academic ranks to become a professor of Veterinary Medicine and later the pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Throughout his career, Ambali supervised numerous postgraduate students and published over 80 scholarly articles in reputable academic journals. He was widely respected for his contributions to veterinary science and his commitment to mentoring young academics.

Beyond the classroom, he played significant leadership roles in Nigeria’s higher education sector. He served as Chairman of the Association of West African Universities and was a Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria. His contributions to education and national development earned him national recognition, including the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

The University of Ilorin has described his death as a monumental loss to the institution and the nation. The university’s management paid tribute to his dedication, leadership, and lasting contributions to the growth of the institution.

Several organizations and prominent figures have also expressed condolences to his family. The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) described the late professor as a patriot, an exemplary leader, and a man who served humanity with humility and distinction. The group noted that his contributions to education and community development would remain part of his enduring legacy.

His Janazah (Islamic funeral prayer) is scheduled to take place in Ilorin, where family members, colleagues, students, and well-wishers are expected to gather to pay their final respects.

As tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria’s academic and professional communities, many have described Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali as a visionary administrator whose dedication helped shape generations of students and scholars. His passing marks the end of a distinguished career devoted to education, scholarship, and public service, but his impact on higher education in Nigeria is expected to endure for years to come.
