Former Director of Mobilisation of the Obidient Movement, Morris Monye, has issued a public apology to supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over remarks he made during his resignation from the movement in November 2025.
Monye, who is currently seeking a seat in the Delta State House of Assembly, released what he described as an “Open Apology Letter to the Obidient Movement,” admitting that frustration and personal emotions influenced the controversial resignation letter he previously published.
In the lengthy statement, Monye acknowledged that he made comments which indirectly criticized Obi, despite maintaining respect for the former Anambra governor’s vision and leadership.
He described the remarks as “wrong,” “childish,” and beneath the standards expected from someone who once occupied a leadership role within the movement.
Monye accepted full responsibility for the incident, stressing that no one pressured or influenced him into writing the resignation letter. He added that although he later deleted the statement, he understood that removing it online could not erase the disappointment or damage caused among supporters.
Addressing Obi directly, Monye apologized for what he called a failure to uphold the values of sacrifice, accountability, and constructive criticism associated with the Obidient Movement.
He also extended an apology to members of the movement across Nigeria, especially young supporters who viewed the internal dispute as unnecessary public drama capable of weakening the broader political cause.
Monye stated that his apology was not motivated by a desire to regain influence or position within the movement, insisting that he currently enjoys private life and only wished to take responsibility for his actions.
The former mobilisation director said leadership also involves admitting mistakes and rebuilding trust through consistent actions rather than mere words.
The apology has generated mixed reactions online, with some Obidient supporters welcoming the gesture as a sign of maturity and accountability, while others remain skeptical due to the circumstances surrounding his resignation and current political ambitions.
Political observers note that the incident reflects the continuing tensions and emotional divisions that have emerged within parts of Nigeria’s opposition movements following the 2023 elections and subsequent political realignments.
The Obidient Movement, which rose prominently during Obi’s presidential campaign, remains one of the country’s most influential youth-driven political networks, with supporters continuing to advocate governance reforms, accountability, and greater citizen participation in politics.
Monye’s latest statement comes at a time when several former allies and political actors linked to the movement are repositioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, leading to renewed debates about loyalty, ideology, and the future direction of opposition politics in Nigeria.
