Exclusive: Legal Questions Arise as APM and NDC Share Same National Legal Adviser

Fresh controversy has erupted in Nigeria’s political scene as it emerged that Barrister Reuben Egwuaba is currently serving as the National Legal Adviser for both the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The dual role held by Egwuaba has raised questions among legal experts, party members, and political observers about possible conflicts of interest and the implications for party litigation, strategy, and compliance.

According to party insiders, Barr. Egwuaba’s name appears on official documents and communications for both parties, an unusual situation in Nigeria’s multi-party democracy where legal advisers play crucial roles in defending party interests, drafting constitutions, and representing parties in court disputes. The revelation has sparked debate about the ethical and legal propriety of a single individual representing the top legal interests of two separate political organizations, particularly as both parties gear up for the 2027 general elections.

Legal analysts note that while there may not be explicit statutory prohibitions against such dual representation, the practice could raise significant concerns regarding confidentiality, loyalty, and the effectiveness of legal counsel—especially if the two parties become involved in disputes with each other or have divergent interests.

Party officials from both the APM and the NDC have yet to issue public statements clarifying Egwuaba’s status or addressing the potential conflict. However, some members have privately expressed unease, warning that the arrangement could expose both parties to legal challenges and undermine internal trust.

As Nigeria’s political landscape becomes more competitive and litigious ahead of the next election cycle, the situation is expected to draw further scrutiny from stakeholders and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
