As Nigeria’s armed forces conduct military simulation exercises involving helicopters, troops and tactical equipment, many Nigerians are asking a difficult question: could some of these resources be better deployed in the urgent rescue of kidnapped schoolchildren and the fight against terrorists?
The concern has gained traction following reports of the abduction of schoolchildren in the Ibadan area, with families anxiously awaiting their safe return. For many citizens, every available military asset should be focused on intelligence gathering, aerial surveillance and rescue operations where lives are immediately at risk.
Military exercises are a standard part of maintaining operational readiness. Armies around the world routinely conduct drills to improve coordination, test equipment and prepare troops for real-world emergencies. Defence officials often argue that such training is essential because a military that does not train effectively may perform poorly during actual combat.
However, critics argue that the timing of large-scale exercises matters. They contend that when citizens are in the hands of kidnappers or terrorist groups, the government’s immediate priority should be demonstrating every possible effort to secure their release and dismantle the criminal networks responsible.
Helicopters used for training, they argue, could also support aerial reconnaissance, rapid troop deployment and surveillance in areas where security operations are underway—provided such assets are appropriate and not already committed to other essential missions.
Ultimately, the issue is one of public confidence. Nigerians want assurance that the country’s security resources are being deployed in ways that best protect lives. While military preparedness remains vital, so too does the urgency of responding decisively to ongoing security threats.
For families of abducted victims, the most important exercise is not a simulation—it is bringing their loved ones home safely.
