Crude Oil Surge Above $105 Raises Fresh Petrol Price Hike Concerns in Nigeria

Nigeria may face fresh pressure on petrol prices as international crude oil prices climb above $105 per barrel, raising concerns over higher fuel costs for consumers and increased operating expenses for petroleum marketers.

Brent crude, the global benchmark for Nigerian oil, remained around $105 per barrel on Friday after prices surged sharply amid growing geopolitical tensions and concerns over disruptions to global oil supplies.

The development is significant for Nigeria because domestic petrol pricing remains closely linked to international crude and refined-product market conditions. A sustained increase in global oil prices could raise the cost of supplying petrol, particularly if other components of the pricing structure also move upward.

Petroleum marketers are consequently monitoring the international market closely as the latest crude oil rally threatens to increase their procurement and operational costs. However, the extent to which the increase in crude prices will translate into higher pump prices will depend on several factors, including exchange-rate movements, local refining capacity, product supply and prevailing market margins.

The oil price rally has been driven largely by heightened tensions in the Middle East and concerns about disruptions around major shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude has gained more than 10 per cent over the week despite retreating slightly on Friday.

For Nigerian motorists and businesses, a sustained rise in petrol prices could increase transportation and logistics costs and potentially add to inflationary pressures. Higher fuel costs can also feed into the prices of food and other goods because of Nigeria’s dependence on road transportation.

Nigeria has increasingly relied on domestic refining, particularly following the emergence of the Dangote Refinery, which has helped strengthen local supply capacity. Nevertheless, international crude prices remain an important factor in the economics of petroleum products.

Market watchers will therefore be paying close attention to crude oil prices, foreign exchange conditions and marketers’ supply costs in determining whether the latest global oil rally will result in another petrol price increase in Nigeria.
