Breaking: Muhammad Mamman Nami emerges as PDP flagbearer for Niger 2027

Minna — August 29, 2026. Former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Mamman Nami, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer for the 2027 Niger State governorship election, in a development expected to reshape the political contest in the state.

Nami’s emergence brings a prominent technocrat and former federal public officer into the centre of Niger State’s 2027 political battle.

Who is Muhammad Mamman Nami?

Muhammad Mamman Nami, born on 2 February 1968 in Nami, Niger State, is a Nigerian accountant, management professional, tax administrator and public servant with almost three decades of professional experience.

He built his career around auditing, taxation, tax management, management consulting and advisory services, working with clients and organisations in the banking, manufacturing, services and public sectors, as well as non-profit organisations.

Nami’s academic journey began at Bayero University, Kano, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Sociology. He later proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

His professional experience subsequently took him into Nigeria’s public sector, culminating in his appointment as Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in November 2019.

He succeeded Babatunde Fowler and became responsible for leading the federal agency charged with the assessment, collection and accounting of tax and other revenues accruing to the Federal Government.

Nami remained in office until 14 September 2023, when he was succeeded by Zaccheus Adedeji.

From FIRS to Government House

Nami’s transition from the leadership of Nigeria’s tax administration system to frontline politics represents a major new chapter in his public career.

His supporters are expected to highlight his experience in public finance, revenue mobilisation, institutional management and economic administration as key credentials for governing Niger State.

His nearly three decades of professional experience have also exposed him to the challenges facing businesses, government institutions and the wider Nigerian economy.

For Niger State, his emergence presents voters with a candidate whose public profile has largely been built around professional and administrative experience rather than conventional grassroots politics.

The political challenge ahead

As the PDP’s 2027 governorship candidate, Nami now faces the task of translating his technocratic experience into a political programme capable of connecting with voters across Niger State.

Issues likely to dominate the campaign include security, agriculture, infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, youth empowerment, internally generated revenue and economic development.

His experience at FIRS could also place taxation and internally generated revenue at the centre of his economic message, particularly as states across Nigeria grapple with increasing fiscal pressures.

Nami’s emergence is therefore more than a change of political platform. It represents the movement of a career public administrator from the federal revenue system into the highly competitive arena of state politics.

A new chapter begins

From his early life in Nami, Niger State, through his education at Bayero University and Ahmadu Bello University, to almost three decades in professional practice and eventually the leadership of FIRS, Nami has built a career spanning accountancy, taxation, management and public administration.

His emergence as the PDP flagbearer now opens what could become the most politically consequential chapter of that journey.

The question before Niger voters in 2027 will ultimately be whether the technocrat who once managed Nigeria’s federal tax machinery can convert his experience in revenue and public administration into the political leadership required to govern Niger State.

The race for Niger State Government House has entered a new phase.
