Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised concerns over the Federal Government’s reported allocation of ₦6.44 billion for activities related to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling for greater transparency in the management of public funds.
In a statement, Atiku questioned the rationale behind the budgetary provision, arguing that government spending should reflect the country’s pressing economic and social priorities. He urged the relevant authorities to provide a detailed explanation of how the funds are expected to be utilized.
According to the former presidential candidate, Nigerians deserve clear information on major public expenditures, particularly at a time when the country is facing economic challenges, including inflation, rising living costs, and demands for increased investment in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure.
Atiku maintained that transparency and accountability remain essential principles of democratic governance. He called on the Federal Government to ensure that all budget allocations are subjected to public scrutiny and implemented in accordance with existing financial regulations.
