The Nigerian Army has announced a series of operations targeting suspected criminal elements in Enugu State, including the destruction of camps and the arrest of a kidnapping suspect. However, the announcement has sparked controversy following allegations of reused images.
According to the Army, troops operating under “Operation Eastern Sanity” carried out a raid on April 14 in Ajali Forest, located in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. During the operation, soldiers reportedly neutralised an improvised explosive device (IED) and dismantled camps allegedly linked to the proscribed group Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a separate operation in Adani, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, troops said they arrested a suspected kidnapper found in possession of a rifle and approximately ₦2 million, believed to be ransom proceeds. The Army linked the activities to alleged funding networks associated with IPOB.
However, the operation has drawn criticism after observers noted that images released by the Army appeared similar to those earlier shared by activist Harrison Gwamnishu. The activist had posted the photos in connection with a different incident involving the rescue of a kidnapped woman identified as Mrs. Joseph Victoria.
The overlap has triggered accusations on social media that the Army may have reused images, raising concerns about the credibility of the report. While some critics described the development as possible propaganda, others have defended the military, commending its efforts to tackle insecurity in the region.
As of the time of reporting, there has been no independent verification of the Army’s claims, and the police have not issued any official statement regarding the incidents.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions surrounding security operations in the South-East, where authorities continue to confront separatist activities and rising cases of kidnapping.
