The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has escalated its rhetoric over the 2027 electoral timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warning that the framework represents what it described as a “silent democratic coup” against Nigeria’s opposition space.
In an expanded declaration, the party urged Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious lines to remain vigilant and actively defend the country’s democratic foundations. According to the ADC, electoral guidelines must never become instruments that weaken pluralism or shrink the political space available to alternative voices.
The party further called on citizens, civil society organizations, youth groups, and professional bodies to scrutinize the evolving electoral framework and demand transparency in all processes leading to 2027. It argued that democracy thrives only when institutions operate independently and when the electorate insists on accountability.
Referencing concerns about executive influence, the ADC reiterated its demand that INEC must clearly demonstrate autonomy and avoid any perception of advancing political interests from Aso Rock. The party maintained that safeguarding democratic norms is a collective responsibility that extends beyond political parties to the broader Nigerian populace.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace, the ADC’s strong stance signals intensifying friction between opposition parties and electoral authorities, with public trust, institutional credibility, and constitutional compliance emerging as central themes in the unfolding political discourse.
