Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has clarified that the tenure of the state’s local government chairmen will not automatically end in November 2026, putting to rest speculation over the expiration of their four-year mandate.
Otti made the clarification while addressing concerns surrounding the tenure of elected officials across the 17 local government areas of Abia State.
The governor’s position is significant because the chairmen and their deputies were inaugurated in November 2024 after the local government elections held on November 2 of that year. The elected officials replaced transition arrangements that had previously been used to administer the councils.
The governor explained that the relevant legal provisions guiding the tenure of the council officials must be properly understood before any conclusion is reached about when their tenure ends.
The clarification is expected to ease uncertainty among the chairmen, councillors and other stakeholders in the state’s grassroots administration.
Local government administration remains an important part of governance because councils are responsible for delivering services and implementing development programmes at the grassroots level. Any uncertainty over leadership could therefore affect planning and continuity in the 17 councils.
Otti’s administration has previously emphasised the importance of effective local government administration in delivering development closer to residents.
The governor’s latest statement also comes as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 general elections. Local government structures are expected to play an important role in grassroots mobilisation and the implementation of government programmes.
Abia’s current elected council chairmen emerged from the November 2024 local government elections, with the 17 councils subsequently inaugurated by Governor Otti.
The governor’s clarification means attention will now shift to the precise legal interpretation of the tenure provisions and the continued administration of the councils.
As the state moves towards the 2027 political season, the continuity of elected local government leadership is likely to remain an important issue for political parties, council officials and residents across Abia State.
