The Kano State Government has empowered 1,900 butchers with modern working tools as part of efforts to enhance livelihoods, improve hygiene standards in the meat industry and strengthen the state’s livestock value chain.
The empowerment programme, unveiled by the state government, is designed to improve the productivity of butchers operating in various markets and abattoirs across Kano. Officials said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to supporting small businesses, creating sustainable employment opportunities and promoting public health through safer meat processing practices.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony, government representatives said the beneficiaries were selected from different local government areas across the state following consultations with butchers’ associations and relevant stakeholders in the livestock sector.
According to the officials, the distributed equipment includes essential tools required for modern meat processing and handling. The government explained that providing the tools would not only improve the efficiency of the beneficiaries but also encourage compliance with health and sanitation regulations in slaughterhouses and meat markets.
The state administration noted that the livestock and meat processing sector remains an important contributor to Kano’s economy, providing employment for thousands of residents while supporting food security and commercial activities within and outside the state.
Officials emphasised that improving the working conditions of butchers would enhance the quality of meat supplied to consumers, reduce the risk of contamination and promote better environmental practices in abattoirs.
The beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the state government, describing the initiative as timely support that would reduce operational costs and improve their businesses. Some of the butchers said acquiring modern equipment had become increasingly difficult because of rising prices, adding that the intervention would enable them to provide better services to customers.
Leaders of butchers’ associations also commended the government for recognising the contributions of their members to the state’s economy. They pledged to ensure that the distributed tools are used responsibly and in accordance with established hygiene and professional standards.
Agricultural and economic experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that supporting operators across the livestock value chain can stimulate economic growth, improve food safety and encourage entrepreneurship. They stressed that continuous investment in agricultural and livestock-related enterprises remains critical to reducing unemployment and boosting local production.
Public health specialists also highlighted the importance of modern equipment in maintaining sanitary conditions during meat processing. They noted that improved hygiene practices help reduce the spread of food-borne diseases and strengthen consumer confidence in locally processed meat products.
