Retired military officers have expressed concern that a monthly salary of ₦100,000 remains inadequate for Nigerian soldiers despite the Federal Government’s recent efforts to improve personnel welfare through salary adjustments.
The former service members argued that while the pay increase is a positive step, it does not sufficiently address the economic realities facing soldiers and their families amid rising inflation and the increasing cost of living. They noted that military personnel continue to serve in challenging and high-risk environments, making improved remuneration essential to maintaining morale and operational effectiveness.
According to the retired officers, adequate welfare remains a critical component of national security. They emphasized that better salaries, improved allowances, quality healthcare, decent accommodation, and enhanced insurance benefits are necessary to support troops carrying out security operations across the country.
The ex-military personnel also called on the Federal Government to periodically review military salaries in line with prevailing economic conditions. They argued that competitive compensation would not only improve the welfare of serving personnel but also boost motivation, professionalism, and commitment to duty.
The remarks come as the government continues implementing measures aimed at improving the welfare of members of the Armed Forces. Authorities have maintained that supporting military personnel remains a priority, particularly as security agencies intensify efforts to combat insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other security threats.
