Minister of Works, David Umahi, has dismissed claims that anyone is plotting against the life of Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, insisting that there is no basis for such allegations.
Umahi made the remarks while addressing concerns surrounding the growing political tension in the country. He urged Nigerians to avoid spreading narratives capable of escalating divisions, stressing that political disagreements should not be interpreted as personal hostility or threats to the safety of political leaders.
According to the minister, Nigeria’s democratic system allows citizens and political actors to express differing opinions without resorting to violence. He maintained that Peter Obi, like every Nigerian, deserves adequate security and the constitutional right to participate freely in the country’s political process.
The former Ebonyi State governor emphasized the importance of issue-based politics, urging political supporters across party lines to promote peaceful engagement ahead of future elections. He noted that inflammatory comments and unverified claims could heighten political tension and undermine national unity.
Umahi also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation. He stated that security agencies remain responsible for protecting public figures and ensuring that the country’s democratic space remains peaceful.
