Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has welcomed the successful rescue of schoolchildren and teachers who were reportedly abducted in Oyo State, describing the development as a moment worthy of thanksgiving and national relief.
Reacting to the news, Obi expressed gratitude for the safe return of the victims and commended everyone involved in the rescue efforts. He said the outcome offered hope to families affected by the incident and underscored the importance of prioritising the safety of children and educators across Nigeria.
According to Obi, every successful rescue operation should be celebrated, but it should also serve as a reminder of the urgent need to strengthen security around schools and communities. He stressed that protecting lives must remain one of the government’s highest responsibilities, particularly in the face of persistent security challenges affecting several parts of the country.
The former Anambra State governor also extended his sympathy to the families who endured uncertainty during the period of the alleged abduction. He noted that no parent or guardian should have to experience the trauma of not knowing the whereabouts of their children while in school.
Obi further called for sustained investment in intelligence gathering, emergency response systems, and security infrastructure to prevent similar incidents. He maintained that ensuring a safe learning environment is essential for improving access to quality education and restoring public confidence in the nation’s educational system.
The rescue of the schoolchildren and teachers has generated widespread reactions from Nigerians, with many citizens expressing gratitude while urging security agencies to intensify efforts to tackle kidnapping and other violent crimes targeting schools.
