The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reacted to the recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, which set aside an earlier order directing the commission to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as a political party.
INEC said it would comply with the court’s decision after obtaining and studying the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the judgment.
The electoral commission disclosed that it has already applied for the Certified True Copy of the ruling delivered by the Federal High Court and would act strictly in accordance with the law once the document is received and reviewed.
The commission’s response marks its first official statement since the court nullified its previous judgment that had compelled INEC to register the NDC.
The Lokoja court ruling has generated widespread political and legal debate, with several stakeholders expressing divergent views over its implications for the NDC’s registration and Nigeria’s democratic process.
By awaiting the Certified True Copy of the judgment before taking further steps, INEC signalled its intention to ensure that any action it takes is guided by the court’s official pronouncement and the applicable provisions of the law.
