Obi Accuses Gov’t of Blocking His 2027 Presidential Bid

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has alleged that there are efforts to prevent him from contesting Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at a leadership event in Anambra State on Friday, Obi claimed that recent legal developments affecting the registration of the NDC were part of attempts to frustrate his political ambition ahead of the next general election.

His remarks followed a ruling by the Federal High Court in Kogi State, which vacated an earlier order that had led to the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The court held that the previous proceedings were procedurally flawed because the Peace Movement Party, which claims rights to the disputed NDC logo, was not joined as a party in the case.

The court consequently directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reverse the party’s registration pending a fresh hearing on the matter.

Reacting to the development, Obi’s supporters described the ruling as a temporary legal hurdle rather than the end of the party’s political journey. The NDC leadership has indicated its intention to challenge the decision at the appellate court, expressing confidence that the matter will ultimately be resolved in its favour.

Obi maintained that despite the legal challenges, he remains committed to pursuing his presidential ambition and expressed confidence that democratic institutions would ultimately uphold justice and fairness.

The legal dispute comes as INEC continues preparations for the 2027 general elections, including the opening of relevant portals and administrative processes for political parties and candidates.

Political observers note that election cycles in Nigeria are often accompanied by legal contests over party registration, candidate eligibility, and internal party disputes, making the courts an important arena in the country’s democratic process.

The outcome of the appeal is expected to have significant implications for the NDC’s participation in the 2027 elections and could influence the broader political landscape as campaigns begin to gather momentum.

For now, the case remains before the courts, while all parties involved continue to pursue their respective legal and political options.
