Onanuga Claims Some Nigerian Ministers Use Personal Funds to Run Government Offices

The Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has claimed that some ministers in the Nigerian government are using their personal resources to support the operations of their ministries due to budgetary limitations.

Onanuga made the statement during an interview with broadcaster Charles Aniagolu, where discussions centred on the performance of the Tinubu administration, government spending, and the economic challenges facing the country.

According to Onanuga, financial constraints within government allocations have made it difficult for some ministries to effectively carry out certain responsibilities, leading some ministers to contribute their own money to maintain essential office activities.

Aniagolu challenged the assertion during the interview, questioning why public officials would need to personally finance government operations if the administration’s budget and financial resources were adequate.

The exchange highlighted broader concerns over public finance management, government expenditure, and the capacity of ministries to deliver services under current economic conditions.

Supporters of the administration may view such personal contributions as a demonstration of commitment and sacrifice by public officials seeking to ensure that government work continues despite fiscal challenges.

Critics, however, argue that the claim raises serious questions about budget implementation, institutional funding, and whether government agencies have sufficient resources to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without relying on private contributions from officeholders.

The remarks have generated public debate, particularly against the backdrop of Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, inflationary pressures, and increasing scrutiny of government spending.

Analysts note that effective public administration requires transparent and sustainable funding mechanisms, as reliance on personal contributions by officials can raise concerns about accountability, continuity, and the proper functioning of state institutions.

The discussion also reflects the wider national conversation on balancing fiscal discipline, economic reforms, and the need for efficient delivery of public services to Nigerians.
