Peter Obi Calls on Tinubu to Resign, Cites UK Example of Political Accountability

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign, arguing that the country is facing deepening economic and security challenges under his administration and that true leadership requires accountability when governments fail to meet the expectations of the people.
Obi’s remarks came as he referenced British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, pointing to what he described as the culture of responsibility in established democracies, where leaders are often held accountable for policy failures, poor governance, or unmet promises. According to Obi, public office is a trust that must be earned and sustained through performance, not merely through electoral victory.
The former Anambra State governor expressed concern over the state of the Nigerian economy, citing rising inflation, the high cost of living, unemployment, worsening poverty levels, and the continued depreciation of the naira. He argued that millions of Nigerians are struggling to meet basic needs while government officials continue to assure citizens that reforms are yielding results.
Obi also raised concerns about the country’s security situation, noting the persistence of banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and violent attacks in several parts of the country. He maintained that protecting lives and property remains the primary responsibility of any government and that continued insecurity raises serious questions about the effectiveness of current leadership.
According to Obi, leadership is not about holding on to power at all costs but about delivering measurable improvements in the lives of citizens. He argued that in societies where democratic institutions function effectively, leaders are expected to take responsibility for failures and, where necessary, step aside in the interest of the nation.
His comments are likely to intensify political discourse ahead of the 2027 general elections, as opposition parties continue to challenge the performance of the Tinubu administration. Supporters of Obi have echoed his concerns, arguing that Nigeria requires a leadership approach focused on competence, accountability, and prudent management of public resources.
However, supporters of President Tinubu contend that the administration inherited longstanding structural problems and that ongoing economic reforms require time to produce positive outcomes. They argue that difficult decisions taken by the government are necessary to place the country on a sustainable path to growth and development.
The exchange reflects the growing debate over governance, accountability, and the future direction of Nigeria as political actors position themselves for the next electoral cycle.
