Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has announced plans to establish special courts dedicated to the speedy trial of kidnapping and cultism cases, as part of a broader strategy to combat rising insecurity and violent crime across the state.
The governor made the declaration during the parade of suspected kidnappers at the Edo State Police Command headquarters in Benin City, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling criminal activities through a combination of law enforcement, judicial reforms, and community-based security measures.
According to Okpebholo, the proposed courts would focus exclusively on kidnapping and cult-related offences, with the aim of ensuring that cases are concluded within a matter of weeks rather than becoming delayed by prolonged legal processes.
He argued that swift prosecution would serve as a deterrent to criminal elements and help restore public confidence in the state’s ability to protect lives and property.
The governor also advocated for the strict enforcement of existing laws against kidnapping, including capital punishment where provided by law following due judicial process. He stated that individuals convicted of kidnapping should face the full weight of legal sanctions as part of efforts to discourage the growing menace.
His remarks come amid heightened concerns over kidnapping incidents in Edo and other parts of Nigeria, where criminal groups have increasingly targeted travellers, business owners, farmers, and residents for ransom.
During the event, Okpebholo highlighted a recent kidnapping case involving a victim abducted near the Vegetable Market area of Benin City. According to the governor, a coordinated operation by security agencies led to the arrest of several suspects, the recovery of approximately ₦8 million reportedly linked to ransom payments, and the neutralisation of an armed gang member during the operation.
Commending the officers involved, the governor praised their professionalism and bravery, noting that their efforts contributed significantly to the rescue operation and the disruption of criminal activities. He also announced rewards and recognition for personnel who distinguished themselves in the course of the assignment.
The latest announcement forms part of a wider crackdown on insecurity by the Edo State Government. In recent weeks, authorities have undertaken a series of measures, including the demolition of a property allegedly linked to kidnapping operations and intensified raids targeting locations suspected to be used by criminal gangs.
Security agencies have also stepped up operations against cult-related violence following a number of deadly clashes reported in parts of the state. Officials say coordinated enforcement actions are being implemented to dismantle criminal networks and improve public safety.
Residents and community leaders have largely welcomed the governor’s renewed focus on security, though legal experts have emphasised the importance of ensuring that all anti-crime measures remain consistent with constitutional provisions and established judicial procedures.
Analysts note that while stronger penalties may have a deterrent effect, sustainable improvements in security will also require enhanced intelligence gathering, improved policing, community cooperation, and investment in crime-prevention initiatives.
The issue of kidnapping has remained a major national concern, with security experts warning that criminal gangs continue to exploit economic hardship, weak surveillance in remote areas, and porous transportation corridors to carry out abductions.
Okpebholo maintained that his administration would continue working closely with security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to confront the challenge. He stressed that no effort would be spared in ensuring that those responsible for violent crimes are identified, prosecuted, and held accountable under the law.
As Edo intensifies its campaign against kidnapping and organised crime, attention will now focus on the implementation of the proposed special courts and the broader effectiveness of the state’s security initiatives in reducing criminal activities and restoring public confidence.
