Thousands Welcome Kwankwaso Back to Kano After Katsina Visit

Former Kano State Governor and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, received a massive welcome from supporters upon his return to Bichi, Kano State, following a condolence visit to the family of the late retired Major General Rabe Abubakar.

Kwankwaso had travelled to Katsina State to sympathise with the family of the retired senior military officer, who died while in the custody of bandits after being abducted on May 30 during a security incident that reignited concerns over the growing threat of kidnapping in parts of northern Nigeria.

Upon his arrival in Bichi on Wednesday evening, thousands of supporters reportedly lined the streets, waving flags, displaying placards, and chanting solidarity songs as they escorted him to the NDC party headquarters.

Videos circulating on social media showed large crowds gathered along major roads to welcome the former governor, with his media aide describing the turnout as a “mammoth crowd” and evidence of the enduring loyalty of his supporters.

The reception has once again highlighted Kwankwaso’s significant political influence in Kano State, particularly through the Kwankwasiyya movement, which remains one of the most organised political structures in the North-West.

Supporters viewed the gathering as a demonstration of grassroots strength and renewed momentum for the NDC’s presidential ticket comprising former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to party loyalists, the enthusiastic reception reflects public confidence in the NDC’s vision and the continued popularity of its leaders in key political regions.

However, critics questioned the significance of the crowd, arguing that political gatherings are often organised through established networks and should not necessarily be interpreted as a direct measure of electoral support.

Political analysts note that Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most strategically important states due to its large voting population, making the ability of any presidential candidate to command support there a critical factor in national elections.

They also observed that Kwankwaso’s political relevance has remained strong years after leaving office as governor, with his influence continuing to shape political alignments and contests in Kano and the broader northern region.

The condolence visit itself also drew attention to the worsening security challenges confronting many communities in the North-West, where bandit attacks, abductions, and killings have continued to claim lives and disrupt social stability.

The late Major General Rabe Abubakar was widely respected for his service to the country, and his death in captivity generated national outrage and renewed calls for stronger action against criminal groups operating across the region.

As preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, political observers believe displays of public support such as the Bichi gathering will continue to be closely watched by parties seeking to assess their strengths and mobilise voters.

For the NDC, the event provided an opportunity to showcase its growing structure in Kano, while for opponents, the true test of political influence will ultimately be determined at the ballot box during the forthcoming elections.
